[ARC5] Spline Knob 9554

I have found a knob, or part thereof, which bears the marks "ARC" and 
"9554". It has an internal spline which slides perfectly onto the tuning 
shaft of the 'ARC/5' receivers. The device is knurled and has an internal 
thread and flat spring of sorts in the knob end.

Is this part of a larger assembly? What is that internal thread and spring 
for?
