I'd agree with John and go even further to say that IMO, one hole drops the value by
at least 50%, depending where it's located and how large it is. Drawer mods in
receivers are reversible by installing an unhacked drawer, but an S0-239 connector
leaves a 4 hole pattern on a transmitter's face, even in the original insulator and
post are installed over it. Paint is a pain to deal with on the black units, but a
scarce unit would be easier to repaint than to patch.
Of course, some units are so hard to find that even a hacked unit is worth the
effort or, if nothing else, it can be a parts donor for an equally scarce, but
better example needing restoration.
Hacked units are still as common as ARC-5 and SCR-274N gear ever was. Clean and/or
unmodified units are getting more difficult to locate. And some units were always
difficult to find in any condition.
