I don't know much at all but it seems to me that most every thing "we" did 
during the war was serious. I got that impression from one of my EE profs 
sho had been at "The Rad Lab" at MIT during that time.

The question is whether or not many folks *knew* about what work was going 
on.  That prof gave me, in the mid 60's, a couple of butterfly tuning units 
that came from the RadLab.  I understood that those things had been 
declassified not that long ago at the time.
