I must admit it has turned out to be one of the most valuable
restoration tools I've ever picked up. I found mine at Dayton for a
C-note several years ago, complete with 24" boom and weighted mount that
fastens to the back corner of the workbench. The stereo feature helps
enormously when you're trying to remove corrosion from a tiny pit with a
dentist tool, though even a monocular "young scientist" type can be
useful on flat panels. For example, certain BC-348 and the Navy RAX-1
knobs are notorious for corrosion damage. The reason becomes plain
under the scope - the engraving is down to bare aluminum through the
black wrinkle paint, and some storage in a damp basement or garage does
its normal duty. Using the microscope, it's possible to clean out all
the corrosion and to touch up, with a tiny drop of black paint at a
time, any chips on the edges of the engraved channels. Also makes side
by side comparisons of dimensional unknowns with a radius or thread gage
dirt simple. It has solved a lot of puzzles for me over those few
years. I would agree with Wayne that it's highly desirable for anyone
who likes to fiddle with the "older but wiser" radios. If the only
thing you work with are NOS sets, then perhaps it's less useful. :-)
