Perhaps you should re-read my comments John, with a little more focus as to the
overall text and less to your name specifically. The only remark I meant to
attribute to you was the one of WWII gear being depot servied in WWII by techs.
Since you posted your original response including this thought perhaps an hour
before, I doubt anyone forgot in that short period of time. I didn't use quotes,
merely said that as you pointed out the gear was maintained when it was in use. The
'often by techs with fewer skills than some of us' part is indeed my wording and not
yours, but since nothing is directly quoted or replied to, it should be abundantly
clear. If you've spent any amount of time repairing or restoring(not just
collecting) this gear, you'd have come across some examples of what I referred to. I
fail to see how following orders equates to any specific level of proficiency in
soldering or electronics repair, though. But then, I never said that they weren't
following orders, only that some lacked the necessary skills to do a good,
professional repair. All it had to do was work, not look pretty.

The comment about lead-acid solder is in no way even connected to what you said, nor
my remarks previous. The entire paragraph was a collection of thoughts on what
constitutes an original piece of gear and what is best for that piece of gear or
labels it as 'modified'. Those of us who know anything about radio are pretty clear
on the fact that lead-acid solder was disontinued prior to WWII(many years, IIRC)
due to its effects on the connections. I tend to think in re-reading the paragraph
that even a newbie wouldn't somehow associate the mention of lead-acid solder with
the skills(or lack thereof)of some wartime techs.

My apologies to anyone on the list who became confused or lost sleep over this.
Rather than try to write each line in a way that can be read as a seperate,
independent thought, in the future I'll just be sure not to include or refer to any
thoughts you may share, John. My intention wasn't to somehow misquote or relate
anything to you that you weren't aware of, merely agree with and expand upon a good
point you had made, hence the words 'as John points out' not 'John said this'. And I
confess - I did rely on the ability of the readers who read your post just prior to
mine to know where the reference to your thought ended and my words continued.

Enough about proper wording - back to ARC 5 gear....
