Hi there,
Fair Radio has/had a large miltary supply 28v/50A,
just forget the number at the moment.
It is a switcher (SCRs rather than transistors), but a large
capacitor on the output.
I use an old UNIVAC computer supply, larger than 19" rack size,
it supplies all sorts of voltages for the old DTL logic
but has two 30A 24V supplies. This is a simple supply,
just diodes and capacitors. Works great on all dynos.
I also have an old forklift battery charger,
made for charging two 12V batteries, once again a simple
diodes and capacitor supply, but with the extra choke in
the primary, to switch in when charge current limiting is
required.
I run 3 SCR-274N recievers with dynos with a home made regulated supply,
an LM317 with a 2N2955 series pass transistor, works fine,
quick start of the dynos.
But my favorite is another home made supply, with just diodes and capaciors,
and switched taps on the primary, "eyeball regulation" I call it.
A VARIAC in the primary can do the same job. Simple.
The supply doesn't need to be regulated to the tolerences that modern electronics
requires, as batteries change voltage as they discharge. One volt is close enough
and who cares if it dips during dyno start!
