Imagine the expressive language used when a wire got unattached and all those little beads fell off into every nook and crany in the airplane!

Which ones? :-) There were several different sizes used for the
command sets in WWII, and they fell into disuse or outright condemnation
(because of dust and associated moisture absorption) by the end of the
war. The diameter of each one depended on the size wire that was used
to go between the transmitters and the antenna feed-through in the
fuselage of the aircraft. I have several sizes here from that era and
can provide pictures and dimensions if desired.
