SCR-183, etc.
I believe the AA, AH, etc. designations were, in practicality,
sequentially later production, though there may have been running
changes, particularly in arrangements of components to fit different
aircraft. (Of course this was AAF, in the case of the 183/283, not
USAF.) The 183s and 283s had to be produced to fit older aircraft such
as the Curtis Hawk 83-1 (Tomahawk P-40) that was used up until at least
1944 when the P-51 came in in numbers.
