Jan...
I ran a 3-band, 2-el quad for over ten years. I modified it several
times from the original Lightning Bolt design [5-band, common feed] to
the 3-B, 2-el, switched feeds final design. I ran the final version on
30m frequently without any feed problems when using an outboard tuner.
Hard for me to say what the pattern/gain looked like. However, it did
show a frontal lobe, side nulls, and some f/b ratio. I could work
whatever I heard without much trouble. By comparison, I subsequently put
up a SkyHawk on the same tower, and it performed a bit better on 30m.
For that matter, I occasionally used the SkyHawk on 40m with some
success, also. Hope this helps.
