Depends on your installation area. I set up at the WF&P RR once a year or
so and usually use a different setup each time. The last one I used was
easiest of all. It was the MFJ-1979 extendable whip that goes to about 17
feet and collapses to 28 inches $59.95. Will work vhf to below 20 meters
all by itself. Take some fine wire (I have a scrap roll of 30 or 32 ga that
I use and just wad it up and pitch it when done. I run out about 4 radials
or maybe a couple more on the ground and just alligator clip them to the
shield nut on the coax for radials. I also have a
http://wolfrivercoils.com/ coil I use mobile that I can use to get to 40 or
80 and haven't tried but with 21 feet of antenna it might go to 160, might
try it someday. It is a coil with a manual slider similar to a screwdriver
antenna but without the motor. I use my mobile mag-mount to sit it on but
any antenna connector with a female thread can be used on the ground or a
plastic bag if you want to keep it clean. The radials supply the ground
plane.
My installation at the RR (WWW.WFPRR.COM - lots of pictures) used my
magmount, coil, and the whip for HF. You only need the coil for 40 and 80.
Easy and fast up and down, light weight, easy to transport. Works great (it
IS a full quarter wave antenna on 20 and up and very little coil on 40).

We are going to Montana in a few days. I am considering taking my FT -857D.
Any suggestions on a very easily erected antenna that would pass easily
through the airport and not take up much luggage space.
