I can't find the article but I built a "spud gun" based upon an QST 
article several years back.  Here's a link to some pictures of someone 
elses creation based upon that article:

Mine is similar to the top picture in the straight configuration.  It 
has a manual valve and uses a fishing reel and some projectiles made 
from 1/2" PVC with end caps.  I picked up a tire stem w/valve at the 
auto parts store and use that to fill from a pancake compressor.  I also 
used a threaded coupling for connecting the air tank to the launching 
tube for easy take-down and transport.

I can very easily launch a pull-line over a 100' tree with roughly 30lbs 
of air.  And accuracy is awesome when it comes to dodging limbs or 
getting the line into a perfect spot in the tree.
