Chris &c.:  I mounted a HyGain AV-14Q up 25' on a shingled roof and 8' stub
tower using the manual's recommendations for cut-to-band radials, and found
that they were spot on: in fact, when I tried to 'gild the lilly' and add
more than the suggested number and lengths, I detuned the vertical!  I now
have one each for four (40, 20, 15, 10) bands, plus one extra for 20, since
I wanted it for stability - a total of five.

What I think happened was that the vertical pipe's
resonance/impedance/electrical existence in the space-time continuum was
inadequate to balance more than a certain amount of wire in the form of
radials, which form the other half of a vertical dipole.  That's what I
think ...
