As a volunteer Civil Air Patrol Ground team member I have mounted a
Larsen NMO mount on a right angle mount at the top of the pack frame I
carry when in the boonies. It normally has a 19 inch whip for our Near
2 mtr CAP frequencies, but I carry a Larsen 5/8th for that extra
oomph. The aluminum pack frame makes a good counterpoise and the
antenna is up high for maximum radiation. A short, i.e. 3 ft cable has
few losses and puts the HT near my mouth and ear where I need it, but in
the harness where it is accessible.
