[Antennas] Need Ideas

It is going to depend mostly on the terrain as for the extended range.
However, once you are in the clearest location available to you wherever you
are, the tape measure beam might just be an excellent option for you.

It is typically a 3 element beam build from cut up tape measures and pvc or
any other lighter weight non-conductive material (smaller, lighter
electrical style "pvc"?). In transport, the tape measure elements are rolled
up into a roll at the boom and tied (paperclips, tiny bungee cord, pony tail
rubber bands, anything handy). The boom does not need to be glued at all
joints (leave a joint near the center unglued so it can be disconnected
there and shortened for transport. i.e.. a super light very compact antenna
that just about cannot be damaged because the elements are totally flexible
in all directions. Attach a 2 or 3 ft piece of coax and the proper HT
connector and you have it.

We had an antenna range set up at a field day and the a tape measure beam
WON. They aren't very cute but they are indestructible and lightweight and
work well. I use mine for foxhunts because you can jam them in the backseat
and yank it back out without hurting it. Try that with an aluminum beam and
you will have junk by the end of the hunt.
