[Antennas] QUADS & BEAMS ??

Ed is right, this could be a long thread! :-) There are lots of
opinions about the subject but not a LOT of hard facts. I will give you
some observations I have had using both in the past:

   1. Quads are quieter (noise, static, etc)
   2. A two element quad is approximately equal to a 3 element Yagi - at
least at fairly moderate heights. Once you can get them really up
there the 3 element Yagi gets the nod.
   3. A quad will perform a bit better if you can't get it very high - I
have one at 40 ft that is quite adequate on 20 meters on up
      (Higher frequency)
   4. Quads can be fragile - ice, winds, etc.
   5. Quads turn in less space (smaller radius)
   6. You can home brew Quads and they are less expensive than a
      commercial Yagi.

If you decide to go with a quad, John, EI7BA has a great article online
and designed a spyder quad (like a Gem Quad). (Google EI7BA and you'll
find the article.) I built one also with the help of LB Cebek W4RNL a
few years ago. I have isolated feeds for each band (20 thru 6 meters)
And it works well on each band. Take a look at his pages, very informative.

Good luck!

73, Tom
