[Antennas] Vertical vs. Beam at Minimum

I have not paid much attention before this minimum in the solar cycle.
Mostly because I really never had a vertical antenna before this time. I
have a Force 12 C3SS beam and it has always worked flawlessly with excellent
results. My vertical is a homebrew 1/4 wave for 40 meters made from 3 inch
diameter irrigation tubing and works well on 40, 30, 20 etc. with a tuner.
What I was wondering is if during a minimum do signals seem to arrive better
to a vertical than a horizontal beam? Sometimes the beam hears better but
most of the time the vertical seems to hear better on most bands 40 and
above. Had the beam for about 6 yrs and the vertical for about 3yrs. I was
just wondering if anyone else has noticed this at their station?
