[Antennas] Hustler 5BTV 40m

I think the 5BTV has two different spiders - it has been three years
since I installed one.

When you tune the antenna you must first start with 10 meters and work
your way band by band down to 40 then to 80 meters.

Problems are most often caused by poor insulation of the radials -
make sure that the radials for 40 meters are 32 foot 4 inches.

Make sure that you have two decoupling coils - each one made of 10
turns of coaxial cable on a six inch form - use six inch pvc well
casing pipe or see if a downspout pvc pipe comes in this size. The
turns of coax should lie flat on the 6 inch pvc pipe and not overwrap.

One of these decoupling coils goes 8 feet or LESS from the antenna.
The other goes 8 feet or LESS from the transmitter. I find four (4)
feet is a good length for the transceiver side - allowing the coils to
rest on the floor and as close to the antenna as possible at the 5BTV
antenna end.

Check you work - check the SWR on 10 meters then check on each lower
band. if the SWR is within acceptable range you probably have the
loading coils in the right places - don't laugh - I had two of them
reversed (they were nearly the same size) - no wonder mine didn't work
right!

After you have installed the decoupling coils, check the swr on 40
meters again? Is it correct? If not adjust the angle of the radials.
Is one (or more) of the radials near a metal object? If so move it
away from that object. Test for swr again, did it improve?

Most of the problems I've found with these installations is simple:
Failure to follow the supplied directions. In case you've lost the
instructions, you can find a copy here:
