Now I always thought the Sterba Curtain was
developed in Germany before WWII. In about
1947 while stationed in USAF in Berlin some
of us wisited the Deutchpost(?) relay station
there. A significant portion of the German
Long Lines facilities used a 60 or 70 MHz, or
close to that, network which survived the war.
Yes, they did have some very tall towers, and
yes, the beams could be steered somewhat by
switching in various phasing sections. And,
for Trivia, the teletype and telephone circuits
we used at Templehof came up from the American
Zone via German Long Lines. We had a few TRC-1
but they never worked. For HF Broadcast using
what looks like a complicated curtain on a
backplane, there's one on Interstate 78 in
Pennsylvania way East of Harrisburg. WMLK
on 9.465 at Bethel, PA.
