[Antennas] Need advice for 1st antenna

Great! We need more antenna tinkerers. Do yourself an economical
favour and build your own antenna. For a first antenna (that works
well and also may very well be the last antenna!) try the well-known
135'-dipole fed with ladder-line. A balanced tuner is probably
something you would like to invest in too, but in the meantime as the
rigs' finals are tube-ones - the PI-filter there tunes over a wider
range than a transistor-PA-rig - you might well manage with a balun on
the feed-line.

No need to invest up to $200, or even the suggested $49.95. Wire is
cheap. Put your money on the ladder-line, that is a good investment.

If you are bent on a G5RV - some people are - then it is not tricky at
all to build. For it to work as Mr Varney once intended, the feeder
should drop straight down in its entire length, i.e. it should be
mounted HIGH. For tube rigs you wont need a tuner.
