Most mobile whips have very low radiation resistance, so using two of 
them in a linear dipole configuration is still likely to be under 50 
ohms.  A hairpin match (a small shunt inductor across the feedpoint) 
is effective at raising the impedance to 50 ohms without further 
narrowing the bandwidth.

If you have a mobile whip that is 50 ohms without any matching 
device, it is probably very lossy.
