GM Jim,
Steel wool will do the job.  You may have to use a brush on the  elements 
though.  Be careful as the elements will get brittle with  time.  I use a product 
called OX-Gard OX-100 on all of my aluminum/steel  antennas.  I rub it in to 
every part of the antenna and use extra at  joints. This helps in conductivity 
AND makes the antennas come apart  easier. There are several products out 
there that do the same thing and can  be found in the electrical section of your 
local home center or hardware  store.
