Dave: I believe that J poles are 1/2 wave with a 1/4 wave transmission
line attached. .

Again, that's my understanding and I suspect your statement that J poles
are 5/8 wave is a typo. You ment 4/8 wave, didn't you?  At any rate,
radials are not required, normally.

I was thinking of a co-linear J-pole type I built years ago from page
16-22 of the 17th edition of the ARRL Antenna Book. I just looked it up,
and 1/4 wave J, 1/4 wave stub, and 1/2 wave elements are right!

I was confusing with a 5/8 wave vertical I got from MFJ for 144 mobile
--never-mind....  )-:

BUT, what about the second part of my post where I asked about ...that one
guy saying all indoor antennae are 12 db down from the same antenna
outside?? Where does that come from? Sounds like he got up on the wrong
side of the bed, too  (-:
