[Antennas] mobile antenna question

Gary,

I read you're message and I was surprised because the three (or even better,
four) magnet mounts with a Hustler whip on top of the roof are the best
antennas I've ever had.

Then I re-read your message (something which it seems I've been
re-practicing recently:-)
You didn't say, but the first time I assumed that you setup was the same as
mine!

I never tried to use this type of antenna just with the short whip segment
that is about 31 inches (MO3 ???) alone. At first I used a large copper
disk - but it was too heavy, then I cut out segments so it wouldn't be so
heavy but now it wanted to act like an airplane and would fly off the roof
at highway speeds. I used top hat spikes from a company who produced them.

I don't own a car anymore, but what I'd do is very novel idea a friend of
mine did.

I would drill a hole in the center of the roof and route a one of those
ultra low hardline replacements like LMR series of coax that Davis RF sells
(others sell it also).

When my friend sold his car, he removed his HF radio antenna, and bought
(get ready for this!)... ... he bought a cellular antenna - one of the
better name high quality ones.

He had one of his friend who knew the dead spots on cellular bring his phone
and they went mobile - no drop outs. Solid coverage even in the holes where
his cell phone used inside the car wouldn't work.

So now the "hole in the roof" became a selling feature!

He sold the car easily to a guy who needed good cell phone coverage. Go
figure..

Subject: [Antennas] mobile antenna question

Going on a fishing trip next week. Planning to take the k2 along.
I have a large three magnet mount for the top of the dodge ram pickup.
I also have a hustler 40 meter antenna.
In the past, this setup has performed poorly for me.
My idea this year is to run a wire from the mag mount directly to some
screw on the body of the truck to improve the counterpoise.
It seems to me this should help somewhat.

Since this is a once or twice a year thing, and not my truck, can't drill
any holes.
Anyone got a better suggestion?

Thanks for the help.
