You might look at the antennas at http://www.packetradio.com/ but these are 
only one band.

I'd lengthen your bug catcher to 36 inches, and buy some spurs for it.  It 
will work much much better as the spurs lengthen the electrical height of 
the antenna and make it much more efficient than it would be otherwise.

It seems you live in a noisy area - MFJ sells a "noise eliminator" which is 
a phasing box which nulls out the noise that is generated locally (as yours 
seems to be).  You might live near a swimming pool (ionic action by chlorine 
generates "static"), electrical motors, etc. and this device would eliminate 
it.
