You're right Robert. With a little more information the antenna can be
modeled in NEC to determine the feed point impedance and using several of
the transmission line programs out there a good estimation of the impedance
presented to the tuned can be found.
I use a Matchbox most for my tuned fed antennas. I've found that the
Matchbox likes impedances in the range of 400-800 ohms - although, on some
bands, it can be pushed a little bit. On those occasions when the Matchbox
will not bring the SWR down to a value that my rig likes I just switch a
T-type tuner in series and tweak things up a bit. Some feel that is too
much work, but I subscribe to the belief that real hams twist knobs. :-)
