Chas & group,
I've been following this topic with interest. This sounds like a great
antenna for your field day group.
I have been 'brain-storming' on something similar. A little
background: For the past several years I have been participating in the
IN QSO Party, and having a ton of fun:-) Last year I 'kicked it up a
notch' and decided to do a portable expedition for the contest. What a
blast! Anyway, I do it "field day" style, with tent, marine batteries,
and lots of insect repellent. Last year for antennas I took along a
wire dipole for 75/80 and another for 40. Which, except for some
problems hanging them in the trees, were adequate.
But hey, in a contest adequate don't cut it:-) This year I would like
to do better. State QSO Parties, at least in IN, are almost exclusively
on 40 meters, and the bulk of the stations active are inside IN and some
of the neighboring states. One antenna I have considered is a full wave
40 meter loop. My favorite site is on a wooded hilltop. It has some
nice 60~70 foot oak trees. It would be difficult, but I think I could
get the loop up there in the tree tops. Lately another antenna has come
to mind. Since this is basically NVIS stuff, what about a 40 meter
wire beam with the driven element in the tree tops and the reflector
laid out on the ground? I've seen this design in one of the handbooks,
I believe, and it sounds like it has potential. I may also put up a 20
meter vertical that I can use [with a tuner] to pick up some mults on
the higher bands...
What do you think? What antennas would you use in this situation? This
is primitive conditions, but only a few hundred yards from a parking lot
so I don't have to move stuff to far. Wish I could add a generator and
a nice amp, but the budget just won't allow it...
