I used a 5-btv for some years with good results. Mine
was ground mounted with just an 8 foot ground rod in
the back yard of my Houston,TX area home. I choose
that setup as it provided the easiest way to tune the
antenna. I later added radials that I just laid out on
the ground. They improved the 2:1 swr bandwidth on the
lower bands. For 10 meters I highly reccomend the
Cushcraft AR-10 1/2 wave vertical. I had it up at 20ft
and could regularly get a 30 mile radius from the home
to mobile on 28.430mhz. I've said all that to say that
radials are worth the effort.
