Hello Eugene,

I have seen G5RV antennas run at ll sorts of angle that you wouldn't even
see in a game of twister.

>From what you described, i would have it as clear of objects as possible.

If you have wooden shingles and they get wet, you could have a small problem
if you get to close to the roof but i wouldn't expect it.

I was in the outback of Australia, north of Port Augusta and this ham i met
had a G5RV stuck in a huge tree that had branches hanging down like a
weeping willow, and it was totally invisible right inside all the foliage,
and even when wet, and the swr rose slightly, worked into South Africa with
50w and had 5/9+15 report.

Everyone's circumstances are different.
Sometimes it just won't work no matter what.

All i can say, is GO FOR IT !!!!!!!!!
You'll never know if you don't give it a go !!

Subject: [Antennas] just getting started, G5RV questions

Hello all,

Brand spakin new to ham radio. Passed the general written and waiting for my
code exam. I am trying to plan my very first antenna for hf. I gotta tell
you, seems trying to figure out where to hang this is more difficult than
the construction of it! I am thinking of using a wa2nan "true talk" G5RV
(anyone have one of these? 'Cause I have some questions on that too) either
the 204' or 102' versions depending on how I can try to get into trees etc.
So here's my question...

My house has two chimneys, one on the left and one on the right. The third
floor of the house is a shed dormer in the rear only and is used as a
playroom.

I was *thinking* about using the centre of the roof (above the dormer) as
the centre of the dipole, then feeding either side past the chimneys
(probably going through some kind of support) and then onto trees on either
side. Doing this would place the center of the dipole at about 30-35 feet
above ground, but either on top of, or 1+ foot above the shed dormer (house
is wood construction). The radials will run either on top or 1 foot above
the house for about 25+ each side (50 feet total) before being in open air.
This scenario would be for the 204' version. I should mention I have a
murch 2000B 160-10 tuner and I plan to run 100W

What do you think?
Eugene

Is this a major no-no? Should I only consider hanging arrangements
