Mr. Cebik doesn't seem to understand the difference between a vertical
with a counterpoise (Marconi) and a "ground plane" antenna (designed by
an RCA engineer in the '30s) as is used on roofs, poles and etc.

One of my HAM clubs tested verticals on 40 meters using 3 sections made of
3" diameter aluminum screwed together at the joints setting on a 2 liter
insulator. The receive site was in the "far field" several thousand feet
across a huge county owned field. This was our "standard antenna" to
compare other "under test" 40 meter antennas to.
We started with 4 radials a quarter wl long we recorded the "far field"
signal strength, then we doubled the quarter wl long redials then we
remeasured the "far field" signal strength, it was + 3 dB.
A second time we doubled the quarter wl long redials
then we remeasured the "far field" signal strength, it was + 3 dB
more. The "head Fred" at the test site assured us no HAM would be
willing to go past 16 radials, although I wanted to keep going.
I wanted to find out where the returns started diminishing.
