That may be very well correct, but it misses the point I was trying to make.

I remember many moons ago when, just a lad, in high school. I had an 
English teacher who had an English text book printed in the early 1800s. In 
it was a word (darn, I forgot what the word was) that had been spelled 
three different ways - in the same book! It seems that during the last 
century we have become far more fussy about spelling than in previous times.

A few years back I visited a Lewis and Clark display in Washington state. 
In reading the writings in their log books I saw they were very poor 
spellers - but I could read and understand what they were saying.
