Elan:
Any kind of wire can be used as long as it is strong enough to be 
self-supporting.  It doesn't have to be off the ground, but is best if 
it is high enough so you don't hang yourself, or entangle the wildlife.
I have a 500 foot one which is unterminated, and works very well. 
Generally longer is better...
