Hi Sam:
(1) We are talking about skip; generally 1,000 miles or more; and
(2) You are correct about not thinking too much of the R-7 [or the R-7000 for that matter]. Most owners of either who are honest will attest to the fact that this is not an effective antenna when compared to its full size wire equivalent. The comparision was to assist those who lack the technical background to appreciate the difference.
