[Antennas] More: Elevated Cushcraft R-7

Hi Dennis:

Cushcraft recommended mounting this antenna 10 feet off the ground. Don't ask me why.

I have a R-7 mounted on a pipe on top of my house with the base around 25 feet off the ground. Comparing it [on 40 meters] to an inverted vee for 40 meters that I have at a comprable height, it is 1.5 "S" units down from the inverted vee. On the higher frequencies, it comes closer, but still down from a full size dipole. It is a substandard design unless all you can put up for all band use must reside within a space that is 20 feet tall and no more than 6 feet across.

Sorry to all of you out there that may have WAS, WAC or worked 187 countries with this antenna. Your bedsprings probably would have done the trick many months sooner.

Thanks to all for their thoughts. I've had a few more.

The whole reason I had this idea was because of its
independence from a
ground radial system, so I thought "higher = better".
Many have agreed.

So...the plan. I have in mind to erect a 50 ft mast on
the roof to
support one end of a 80m loop, as well as various
VHF/UHF antennas at or
near the top. I know Cushcraft wants clearances
between any object and
the R7, and suggests non-metallic guys for a mast. I
don't think rope
guys would be a problem in this case, and I'm thinking
if the nearest
antenna is 10ft or more from the R7, I'd be OK.

Comments?

Dennis

---------------
Dennis Wade
KG6ZI
Carmichael, CA

______________________________________________________________
Antennas mailing list
Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/antennas
Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.html
Post:
