K7LXC and N0AX put out a very comprehensive report a few years back
comparing measurements of several verticals, including the R-8.  You can
purchase a copy from <http://www.championradio.com>.  I recall that the
R-8 appeared to come out on top overall, but depending on one's needs,
some of the others might be better in some instances.  I wouldn't
recommend ground mounting it, as the counterpoise wires should probably
be elevated a bit. 

I have the somewhat similar Hy-Gain AV-640 mounted on a pipe mast about
13 feet above ground and am quite satisfied with the performance.  The
AV-640 doesn't use any traps and is less expensive than the R-8.
