[Antennas] Elevated Vertical

One advantage of raising the vertical is to clear all obstructions of a
ground mounted vertical. This should help on all bands.I found that three
radials on each band works extremely well.It also requires each radial be
tuned with a grid dip meter for optimum performance.I found that a tuned
radial does not necessarily match the quarter wave formula nor the quarter
wave plus 5 percent formula ,hence the importance of tuning the radial.I did
slope the radials at 45 degrees and checked the feed point impedance on each
band and it was close to 50 ohms. This was checked at the input end of the 75
ohm matching section, not at the base of the antenna..
Presently I use a ground-mounted HFV-6 with 36 randum length wires (24 to 68
feet) laying on the surface of the ground and it does not perform as well as
the elevated version,I notice about a 1 S unit degradation on 20 and above
on DX signals.
Hope to get the antenna on a 40 foot tower this spring.
