In a perfect antenna in free space, maybe length is not an issue,
but I have not seen one of them yet.

If an antenna is properly designed and is the proper length, it should
present 50 ohms of resistive load at the feed point. Otherwise, the only reason
that coax length should matter is because the coax is picking up common mode
currents which will indeed vary with the length of the coax. This can be
prevented by using a 1:1 balun, which can be achieved by coiling a number of
turns at the feed point, or by using a commercially available balun.
