Thanks for the replies. Regarding the antennas I do not have an antenna 
specifically for 17 metres and have tried tuning my
10 metre beam, a 20/15/10 metre tribander and also a dipole for
80/40 metres and not one of them will tune on 17 metres.
Incidentally I also have a  IC761 with built in atu and that will
tune all 3 antennas where i could operate with them which led me
to believe that there was something inherent in the MFJ set up that
would not tune the antennas. My other rig which I am using does not have 
the built in atu which is why I wanted to get this particular problem 
sorted out.
