Thanks Jens,Alex & Robert for your replies.
My initial calculations were done using the Gamma match program by 
K4VX.  I am using 1 inch tubing for the Elements and 1/2 inch tubing for 
the gamma rod with 3.25 inch spacing.  I have varied the length of the 
gamma rod and although a change in capacitance is required the impedance 
did not change which I guess is why I am getting splinters under my 
finger nails with all the head  scratching. According to K4VX's program 
if I change the spacing down to 2 inches the length of the gamma rod  
increases by about 4 inches and only just over 1 pfd capacitance change. 
I varied the length of the rod by up to 3 or 4 inches in either 
direction with virtually no change.
