Thankd for the suggestion Don, I had not thought of trying that
but have just done so with my Homebrew Dummy load which straight through 
shows zero relected but through the tuner it
will only bring it down to around 3 or 4 to 1 which my FT-one finds 
unacceptable to operate into. This now more than ever sugggests
to me that there is something inherrent in the MFJ design that will not 
allow it to tune on 17 metres. The basic  circuit design suggests
that this would not be the case but I cannot see any other reason for 
it. I can tune any antenna on all other bands from 80 to 10 metres, but 
it refuses to do so on 17 metres.
