You can't really condemn a vertical that is only  7' long on 40 meters. 
Remember, the Hustler 40 m vertical mobile antenna (I used one for years) is 
not a bad antenna for mobile use. But yes, I would definitely prefer a G5RV 
thrown up in a tree over any kind of vertical.
