What you say sounds right based on my read of the instructions.  Note  that 
you should have one VHF radial attached.  My only concern is that  there may 
not be much external noise on 6 meters (compared to 40 meters, for  example), so 
it may be harder to hear a peak in the noise.  Give it a try  and see how it 
goes.  If you can't hear a noise peak, then SWR measurements  at low power may 
be the only way to resonate the antenna.  Let us know how  you do.
