...you are absolutely correct. Due to the wild impedance excursions,
anything connected to a such a feed line will have a hard life!
I think that a transmission line transformer wound on a non ferrite core-
some tens of turns might be worth trying. In any case I had the good fortune
to have a few  mix 2 cores of about 2.5inches in diameter and played around
with them. A pair of wires space for about 200 ohms characteristic
impedance, some 20 turns of it has served me very well in such a role.
Strictly speaking, a 2 core balun of the type described by W2FMI (Sevick) in
his book " Understanding, building and using baluns and ununs" would be the
better choice, since it is designed to force equal currents across wild
impedances.
I think I have to 6 to 1 version scanned on my machine. I sent it to one of
the guys for use on a offset fed Windom multiband. If you want to see it, I
