You have to think 3 dimensionally:-)  A good way to "visualize" it Frank 
is like squeezing a balloon.  You actually loose signal in the  straight 
up direction, but gain signal down toward the horizon in all directions.

Take off angle is close.  This actually refers to how much of the signal 
is radiated down toward the horizon where it is needed, or at a higher, 
less useful angle.  Less useful on 2 meters, but not necessarily less 
useful on HF...
