That's a normal question from one who is "brought up" in VHF, UHF environment. However on 
HF you will find most of the noise is from external sources and it (noise) will suffer the 
same attenuation as the signal, therefore the S/N ratio will remain the same, even with a 
lossy antenna! So we don't worry about that factor. What we do try to do with good HF 
antenna design is to avoid placing the antenna in a location where noise pick-up is likely 
to be higher than usual.
