Tom, I've had several beams (including my current TH7) up in the middle
of dense woods for more than 20 years and never had a problem with
performance of any of them.  You may notice a slight change in resonant
frequency or SWR between summer when the foliage is full and winter when
the trees are bare, but it will not be significant.

As far as the 3 db goes...  If you want to rag chew with garden variety
European stations or the West Coast you will never notice the
difference.  On the other hand if you are contesting, trying to break DX
pileups or chasing weak signals 3db is MAJOR.
