I've made these for my Icom T 22A and with the
original apx. 6 inch antenna, I agree that it doesn't
seem to do enough gain wise to be worth the bother.

The best thing I've had going,gain wise, is home brew.
I took a Male BNC to SO-239 Adapter;

then took a telescoping antenna off a junk radio, cut
it to 19.25 " (1/4 wave) and jammed it in the 239 end.
