I certainly agree, Ron. I didn't expect it to help much without being
right at the shoreline, but I'm definitely not complaining :^)
After moving here from Arizona (and before putting up the vertical) I
threw up an L-shaped piece of wire 33 ft on one leg and 70 ft on the
other, fed at the corner with coax and a choke balun (it fit the
dimensions of the roof) only about 17 feet above ground and worked QRP
DXCC in less than a year, just to see if I could do it (conditions were
pretty good in 2000-2001, which helped).
I suspect the no-radial verticals probably work a bit better above poor
ground if elevated a bit so there is less ground coupling, although I
haven't really analyzed that.
The AV-640 is longer than 1/4 wavelength on each band (capacity loaded
on 15, 20, 30 and 40) and I guess one could say they are off-center fed
(counting the counterpoise as the other section) although I cringe a
bit at Hy-Gain referring to it as a Windom in some of their ads.
