Dear Kelley,

It will affect the input impedance seen at the feed point. My advice would
be to leave it alone unless your input impedance seen at the feed point has
too much reactance and you want to reduce  or cancel it. My experience on
this is limited to using the insulated base of the tower as the feedpoint
and using a large 3" dia coax bonded at the top of the tower and insulated
from there to the ground, at which point it was earthed.
