I think vinegar and Scotchbrite would be fine Dan. Personally, I use two 
cleaners, both by Castrol: SuperClean Tough Task for 'regular' cleaning & 
degreasing; and SuperClean All Wheel Cleaner. The latter would be good for 
any serious cleaning on your aluminum. Both WILL remove some paint-so you 
have to be careful, and test first. SuperClean Tough Task is the BEST 
cleaner/degreaser I have ever seen (well... there are acetone and 
Methyl-Ethyl-Ketone). SuperClean All Wheel Cleaner is a meaner, foaming 
cleaner, that can remove some aluminum/etc. but is very effective on 
corroded or badly 'stained' aluminum/etc.
