Ground plane takes less VERTICAL real estate..GP requires more metal on the plane area for proper operation.....other than that, not much difference (well the dipole will be 60-75 ohms depending on height..also the coax must be run 90deg away from it for a 1/4wave if possible to keep the radiation from getting back into the feedline and allow the dipole to keep a proper "doughnut" pattern of radiation..
Remember the bottom of a vertical dipole must be isolated and kept away from other metallic objects to keep the radiation pattern clean....a GP antenna can have metal below the vertical element.....due to the ground plane effect...
